Affordable Space Adventures

KnapNok Games / Nifflas’ Games · Wii U · 2013–2015

Affordable Space Adventures is a cooperative exploration and puzzle game for Wii U in which players control a small spacecraft using the Wii U GamePad as the ship’s control panel.

I worked on the project as an Assistant Game Designer, with a focus on level design, Unity implementation, prototyping and playtesting. I built and implemented a number of levels and puzzle sequences in Unity, including mechanics involving teleporters and a boss robot, and created simple prototypes to test ideas before handing them over to programmers for full implementation.

Puzzle & Level Design

I designed and implemented multiple puzzle sequences directly in Unity, working closely with programmers and other designers to refine mechanics and pacing. I created lightweight prototypes for new mechanics and interactions, using them to test ideas quickly before handing them over for full implementation.

Another major part of my role was iterative design through playtesting. I helped organise external playtests, observed how players interacted with levels and mechanics, and used those observations to refine puzzles, pacing and player guidance.

LOCALISATION & other

After the original release, I continued working on the project for the Japanese version, handling localisation implementation, UI adjustments, subtitle timing and release support. I worked directly with Japanese publisher Rainy Frog in English and also edited the Japanese trailer.

I also worked on the game’s multiplayer flow, helping to organise the different controller combinations and drop-in/drop-out behaviour for one to three players.

The project gave me experience working across design, implementation, testing and localisation in a small multidisciplinary team, and remains one of the projects where I most clearly learned how design ideas change once real players get their hands on them.

Interview with Nintendo of Europe

As part of the KnapNok Games team, I joined Nifflas and Nintendo of Europe to demonstrate Affordable Space Adventures and its three-player cooperative gameplay. The video highlights the asymmetric roles and use of the Wii U GamePad that were central to the game’s multiplayer design.
