NGJ Fighters is a duel-based fighting game created during Nordic Game Jam 2013 in around 12 hours. It combines the tension of a western-style pistol duel, where the first person to react and attack wins, with the presentation and atmosphere of traditional fighting games such as Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.
The gameplay is deliberately simple, using a single button to attack at the correct moment after the “Go!” signal. The other main hook is that all of the fighting is pre-recorded using live-action video. The roster features eight indie game developers from the Nordic region, including developers associated with Dennaton (Hotline Miami), Vlambeer (Super Crate Box) and Nifflas’ Games (Knytt Underground).
I worked primarily as the programmer, implementing the game logic in Unity and helping turn the concept into a playable prototype within the very short development window. The project was a compact experiment in timing, FMV presentation, humour and rapid prototyping.
